The First Pill

Mara held the tiny white tablet in her palm like it might explode.

She stared at it for twenty minutes before swallowing.

It wasn’t the pill itself—it was what it meant.

Surrender. Trust. The possibility of change.

And the fear of who she might become on the other side.

Alex sat beside her, hand resting on her knee. He didn’t rush her. Didn’t push.

When she finally placed the pill on her tongue and drank it down, she closed her eyes and whispered, “Please work.”

That night, she slept without waking.

It wasn’t peace.

But it was a beginning.
